This wall mounted installation impresses with its undulating, wave like form. Brackets and screws secure the bottom of the steel sheet with a looser attachment of nails at the top. The partly blackened and beaten irregular shaping speaks of a decay.
Representing the ocean with photography etched onto the surface, the industrial is combined with the elemental. The brackets as tentacles 'lead the way'. The lighter coloured areas are delicate and sparse adding a beguiling texture. Their almost featherlike quality evokes the soothing sun dappling. The lights of the gallery superimpose yet another layer of reflection to the viewer.
The work has a microcosmic quality. A monumental scale is implied defying its relatively small size.
The title hints at transcendence - both physical and psychological - renewal and possibly even redemption through a rebalancing. A heralded reclamation of the oceans by those who once flourished there and humankind attentive at the shore line once again.
Like a burnished piece of armour Franks's sculpture hangs like a totem; to be meditated upon at length.
This work is part of a larger exhibition called 'Nebulous - Blurring Boundaries' curated by QLoud Collective and hosted at the compact Purist Gallery in London.
