Its neither the call to battle nor the heralding of the hunt that resonates through the empathetic brass. Like the Vacanti mouse, an ear has grown where it might not otherwise have chosen to. Perhaps through the same will, a resolute fist emerges from a plinth to grasp the whisky hued horn.
Like a bricked up window, the usual function is curtailed but a new one co-opted. The comically large lobe captures instead of broadcasts. The gathered sound from one end and blown air from the other might meet and then briefly tussle within the tube before cancelling into silence.
An instrument designed to sonically penetrate is rendered passive and receptive. In an age when the signal to noise ratio is lower than ever, it reminds us that hearing and listening are not always aligned.
Seen at LumiNoir ART, London on 16 Oct 2025 as part of a group exhibition.
